University of Michigan – Window Film Helps Preservation of the Oldest Building on Campus

In August of 2024, officials at the University of Michigan asked Clearview Tinting to provide guidance in selecting the right window film to aid preservation of the President’s Residence, the oldest building on the Ann Arbor, Michigan campus.

One of the main criteria of this update was that we be able to provide a clean, professional window film installation without interrupting the busy schedule of events in the home. We found the best fit by installing the window film a couple of days at a time, working efficiently to update the glass in the home while keeping the integrity of this historic building intact.

Choosing The Right Window Film For An Historic Preservation

Clearview Tinting window film installers work at the University of Michigan President's Residence in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The window films we selected for this installation are an easy and cost effective way to enhance the efficiency of older wood framed windows like those found in historic homes and buildings. These window tints preserve the glass to ensure a longer lifespan while also providing security, sun control, privacy, temperature control, and more.

Some films are available in clear, to retain the existing look of the glass while still providing added the UV and solar control that are necessary for preserving historic materials.

Built in 1840, The President’s Residence is the oldest building on the University of Michigan campus. The house is currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Being almost two centuries old, it is important to keep the history and the structure of the building intact, while also helping it remain a functional campus resource.

Adding a layer of clear security film helps strengthen the glass without changing the look of the windows. This preserves the historical presence of the structure without altering the physical look and feel of the glass, to abide by the NRHP guidelines for maintaining historic buildings.
